I have the moment to take a temporary position with a semiconductor company and its a temporary position. I did notice that some of the jobs are contract also.

A: To make up one's mind if expenses for travel and lodging away from home are deductible, two requirements must be met.

First, for the allied costs to be deductible, you must have an established "tax home" and intend to return to it once the temporary job is completed. Your nursing home in Manchester sounds as if it is your permanent residence, or your "tax home", and that you returned to it once your job in Mascot ended.

Next, you must determine whether or not the work was temporary in intent. A job away from home that is expected at the start to last one year or less, and actually does last for one year or less, is considered temporary. However, work performed away from abode that is realistically expected to last more than one year (regardless of whether it actually lasts more than one year) is hazy, and therefore, the related expenses would not be deductible.
