Louisiana not appealing rejection of Facebook ban

Louisiana officials are not appealing a federal arbiter's decision to scrap a law that prohibited certain sex offenders from Facebook and other popular networking sites, and the state paid $65,000 to the ACLU of Louisiana for court costs.

Gov. Bobby Jindal, who pushed for the ban, had time again said the state would challenge the ruling. But Marjorie Esman, employer of the ACLU of Louisiana , said Thursday that the organization received a look into from the attorney general's office reimbursing its legal fees and acknowledging the asseverate won't file an appeal.

" Louisiana was wise to be this case now, because the First Amendment rights of the people of this state must be protected at all times," Esman said. "The taxpayers of Louisiana should not have to harbour additional costs in defending a law that should never have been passed in the first place."

The law, which took begin in August, made it a crime for sex offenders convicted of a certain list of crimes to use networking websites, gossip rooms and peer-to-peer networks. That law was overturned in February by U.S. Neighbourhood Judge Brian Jackson, based in Baton Rouge. Jackson said the law was unconstitutional because it would effectively ban those sex offenders from the Internet.
