SB County social services workers protest wage cuts

The walls of Santa Maria's Betteravia Administration Center reverberated Tuesday with chants of "show us what democracy looks like," as about 85 demonstrators protested wage cuts for workers in Santa Barbara County's Community Services Department.

Carrying signs that read "Slashed our paychecks? Where's YOUR cut?", and wearing purple and yellow shirts, the organization of county employees and representatives from Service Employees International Fraternity Local 721, which organized the rally, marched around the government center off Betteravia Street for about 30 minutes before giving speeches in front of the center.

"I wanted as many people out here as workable to make sure people know we're united," said Christine Farro, a county venereal services supervisor in Lompoc who came to march on her lunch break. "Well-deserved restore us to what we had or take the same cut."
