The U.S. Postal Service says it is closing its despatch processing facility in the city, meaning all but 23 of the facility's 182 workers will be offered jobs elsewhere in North Carolina.

"Every stretch a place closes, we're losing 150, 200, 300 jobs," said Unsympathetic Mount resident Brian Surles. "It's a big problem for this town. Unemployment is very high."

Many of those who have lost jobs are heading out of the city and even out of Nash County to look for travail.

"It's hard to find employment," said Ashley Hedgepeth, who recently lost her job as a sales associate along with 100 others at her strict. "I've actually been looking in the Greenville and Raleigh area for employment because there's none really in this district."

As good paying jobs like those at the postal service die out from the area, folks are left with fewer and fewer opportunities, according to one municipal businesswoman.
