can you wear a 'proper' wedding dress for a registry office wedding?

See sorrowful, by proper I mean like a dress you'd normally wear for a church wedding,I've valid read somewhere that's it's totally inappropriate to dress like that for a civil ceramony which has made me anguish now! lol is this book talking a load of rubbish??!! thanks for answering!
I got married 2 weeks ago in a registry office and I wore a 'suited' wedding dress! I never gave it a second though to be honest. Personally, there was no other option for me - the dream of wearing anything else never came into the equation.
